How to wallpaper your dolls’ house
July 10th, 2008Wallpapering your dolls’ house can be a daunting task if you are not confident. Here are our quick tips to make it an easy and enjoyable experience. Remember; always buy one extra piece of paper even if you are sure you don’t need it, it’s so frustrating to make a mistake when you have a limited supply of paper.
Here’s what to do;
- Make sure the walls of the house are primed using a MDF sealant or 50/50 mix of PVA and water.
- Cut your paper to size using a craft knife and metal ruler. When using wallpaper with a bold pattern, make sure you match it up.
- Apply wallpaper paste to your paper using a small paint brush. Make sure you cover all the paper, and use firm even strokes.
- Now apply the paper to the wall, start with the top corner and smooth into place with your hand, or improvise a tool made from an old credit or loyalty card. Press in one direction to get out any air bubbles. Do not attempt to cut openings for doors and windows, do this after the paper has totally dried.
- After leaving to dry overnight, trim your door and window openings with a craft knife.
Our expert tips;
- Make sure you have applied an even coverage of paste. Dry spots on your paper will make air bubbles on the wall. Look at the wall from all angles, if you see any air bubbles, smooth them out straight away.
- Always use a sharp blade, it’s better to use up blades quicker than to spoil your wallpaper.
- If you are nervous about cutting out an awkward shape, cut out a card template first, and stick your wallpaper to the card. The decorated card shape can then be applied to the wall with double sided tape or PVA glue.
