Distressing News…

August 11th, 2008

For period decor to appear as authentic as possible, the conditions of the day need to be considered. Burning candles left sooty marks on walls, as did oil and gas lighting, and coal heating. Soot marks can be simulated with black acrylic paint. Matt black spray paint gives a good sooty effect if sprayed in short bursts.

Once hung, wallpaper can be painted with lemon juice or a weak tea solution to discolour it slightly. Avoid paint or paper containing modern looking brilliant white.

A deteriated look can add a wonderful atmosphere to an attic, basement or servant’s quaters. A very effective aged furniture appearance can be obtained by using a crackle spray, which can be purchased from a craft or DIY store.

These are just a few of the hints and tips we receive from fellow collectors, if you have any more ideas, we would love to hear them.
