Chinese New Year Part 2
December 31st, 2009Last week we showed you how to make the first 3 pieces of furniture for your Chinese themed room. This week we’ll be looking at the bookcase and how you can turn this into this. Pretty remarkable don’t you think?
So let’s get started. Hold on to any bits you don’t use this week as you will need them for next weeks project.
You will need;
Large Wall Shelf Unit (L) – 2754
Cornice, Mitred, 6 pieces, 450mm – 7017
Timber lengths, 3mm x 19mm x 610mm 12 pieces – 5993
Wood Glue, 80g – 9216
Black paint or thick black permanent marker pen
Small saw
Tape measure
Sand paper
- Take your shelves and stand them on their side. This is now the way they will stand.
- Cut the timber lengths to 190mm
- Glue to the top of the shelving ensuring that the over hang on each side is equal.
- Cut 4 pieces of cornice 20mm long
- Use 2 on the underside of the overhang on the top of the unit.
- Use the second 2 on the bottom of the unit as the feet. Set these inside the width of the unit, as shown in the picture.
- Glue these pieces in place.
- Decide how many shelves you would like and where you would like them.
- Measure and cut each one from the timber lengths.
- Glue them into place.
- When all the glue is dry, sand down the whole unit.
- You can now paint it! Or, for speed, why not try a permanent black marker pen? It dries very quickly!
- You can leave the shelves open or cover the back with a decorative paper, such as parchment
And there you go, one Chinese themed shelving unit. Next week we’ll go through the cupboard before we finish up with our Chinese-style doll.
