A few hints and tips to help you in the New Year!

January 10th, 2011

We thought we would provide you with a few hints and tips throughout 2011 to help you get the most out of your hobby.  If you have any advice that you think will help your fellow miniaturists please let us know and we will feature them on our blog.

We thought we would start at the beginning with the construction and the outside of the house.  Hopefully a few of these may be helpful!

1)    Tools and glue can be stored neatly away inside your dolls’ house whilst work is in progress – an egg cup is a useful container for screws!

2)    A clothes peg makes a useful mini-clamp to hold thing in place where no great pressure is needed.

3)    Emery boards are fantastic for sanding very small areas.

4)    To remove “sanding dust” before painting, use a vacuum cleaner with the brush attachment – blowing it away will not be enough!

5)    Damp cotton wool buds are ideal for cleaning those very hard to reach nooks and crannies.

6)    When you start painting your house, we would suggest two or three light coats rather than one thick one – it’s more time consuming, but will be worth it in the end!

7)    Vinyl silk is a hard working paint, ideal for the main surfaces of your house.  Surfaces can also be gently wiped with a damp cloth.

8)    Experiment at making your own textured paints by mixing sand with the paint of your choice.  This will give you an unlimited range of colours and allow you to vary the texture to your individual need.

We’ll post a few hints and tips in the next few weeks – and remember to send us any of your own!
