Even thinking small is bigger in the USA

October 6th, 2011

Americans are renowned for thinking big and that applies even when they are thinking small.

Take Martha Simon from Ohio who, when she ran out of space for her 50-strong collection of antique and miniature dolls’ houses decided to build a museum of her own to put them in.

Of course, this being America, it isn’t just a mere dolls’ house museum but a banquet centre too.  Construction has already begun on the 2.3 acre site and the plan is to open early in the new year.

Martha, a retired nurse, began her collection 20 years ago from a mixture of kits which she assembled and antiques she has restored.  She uses her own tools, installs electricity and furnishes them with period furniture and dolls.

You have to admire Martha’s ambition: her next goal is to celebrate 50 years of marriage to her husband Tom in – where else – the new Dolls’ House Museum and Banquet Centre.
