Handmade butterfly box explodes to reveal a dolls’ house!

October 19th, 2011

Ever thought of using dolls’ house accessories and miniatures to craft a handmade card, collage or creation? You might gain some welcome inspiration from creative competition winner  Jill Embleton.

Jill, 61, from Halifax, scooped the £200 of Dolls House Emporium vouchers for using her imagination to make her Butterfly Holme Exploding Gift Box.

Recently retired from her career as a head teacher, she’s only just found time to enjoy the hobby.

She says: “The gift for my daughter is Holme Lodge miniature dolls’ house, set in the centre of the box, in its own butterfly garden.

“The box ‘explodes’ as the lid is removed. I have intended to make one of these boxes for several years but have never got round to it!

“This competition was the inspiration I needed, along with the beautiful Raspberry Mist wallpaper and motif sheet which I had always thought held so many possibilities.

”It’s been a pleasure to make; I have enjoyed every minute of it.”

She’s used the luscious Raspberry Mist wallpaper and two motif sheets with two further co-ordinating papers, Lilac Butterfly and Apple Floral Circles. These worked with scraps of Summer Meadow paper to create the butterfly and flower themed box. Individual and unusual items were raided from her own dolls’ house materials box!

The finishing touch was the Holme Lodge Miniature Dolls’ House, found in the centre of the box.

There are a myriad of pieces in The Dolls House Emporium catalogue that can be used in crafty projects, from delicate flowers and horse shoes to decorate wedding invitations to dolls who can be re-dressed and turned into individual cake-toppers. With a range of over 2,500 accessories there is bound to be something you can use in any crafty project!

The runners-up, meanwhile, were both on a wedding theme.

Linda Holmes bought a ‘Samuel’ sailor doll to re-dress for her daughter’s wedding cake.

She’d wanted to have the bride riding her favourite horse with the groom standing next to her with their pet Labrador and cat!

Linda, from Dorchester, in Dorset, said: “Samuel was the perfect size so I stripped poor Samuel, ripped his hair off and then redressed him in the nearest facsimile to her wedding dress that I could make, she had set her heart on a fabulous Elie Saab creation which was a dream. His hair was then applied with suitable ringlets and curls and a veil added.

“He acquired white shoes and a bouquet and I then sat him on ‘Blackie’. The cake was a big hit and I couldn’t have done it without Dolls House Emporium.”

Janet Bridge, meanwhile, from Selston in Nottinghamshire, used our black floral wallpaper embellished with white tulips and horseshoe from the catalogue to create wedding invitations and a guestbook.

She said: “My future daughter-in-law wanted her invites and guestbook in black and white and after searching lots of craft shops she couldn’t see the design she wanted.

“Then when visiting Dollshouse Emporium with me one day she saw the exact design she had in mind in the black floral wallpaper so while we were there we chose the embellishments too!”
