How to wallpaper your dolls’ house

October 28th, 2011

One of the messages that comes through loud and clear on the Dolls House Emporium discussion forums is how difficult a lot of people find wallpapering – but it really couldn’t be easier as long as you remember the golden rule: Paste the walls, not the paper!

Here’s a quick step-by-step guide.

  • Size the walls first.  This is because the walls of your dolls’ house are made of MDF which is very porous and soaks up paste like a sponge.  Use a 50/50 mix of PVA glue (available from all DIY stores) and water.  Just paint it on with a brush and leave to dry – ideally overnight.
  • Use ordinary wallpaper paste and mix up thinner than usual because the wallpaper you’ll be using will be lightweight.  Some people prefer to use a Pritt stick rather than wallpaper paste but if you remember to paste the walls and not the paper, you should have no trouble.
  • Paste the walls and apply wallpaper which you’ve measured and cut to fit.  Smooth out lightly with a damp cloth to remove any bubbles and ensure a nice finish.  Wait for the wallpaper to dry and take time to admire your handiwork.

So remember:

  • Size the walls
  • mix the wallpaper paste thinly
  • paste the walls only.
