The ultimate miniature for your dolls’ house?

November 15th, 2011

If you’ve ever fancied owning a Stradivarius violin, albeit a miniature one, then craftsman David Edwards is your man.

A former musician himself, David gave up his career as a professional cellist to make miniatures for dolls’ houses and has made dozens of 1/12 size £1,000 violins based on a Stradivarius.

Talking about his work, David explains that “making the violin is intricate… You have to carve very finely and I use pear wood for that… The tail piece and the finger board are both made in ebony and then you’ve got to string it up. I use real sheep gut.”

David’s miniature making has taken him all around the world and he used to have a waiting list of seven years for one of his exquisite creations, although having reached the age of 75 he no longer takes orders.

You can view David’s work on the BBC website and he will be showing at the Kensington Dollshouse Festival on 3 December.
