Meet Dunkirk Dave and his antique dolls’ house

February 8th, 2012

Groundhog Day, which was immortalised in the Bill Murray film of the same name, is an annual event in the United States.

It takes place every February 2nd when various celebrity groundhogs forecast if there’s going to be a long winter or an early spring.

Punxsutawney Phil is the best known of the rodent weather forecasters but among his rivals, Dunkirk Dave stands out on account of his antique dolls’ house from which he emerges to either see his shadow (six more weeks of winter) or not (early spring).

This year a reporter from the local newspaper, the Dunkirk Observer, was there to witness a reluctant Dave eventually emerge from his antique dolls’ house and, upon not seeing his shadow, forecast an early spring.

By contrast, Punxsutawney Phil did see his shadow and the prognostication from him was a long winter.

We shall have to wait and see who’s got it right this year but Dunkirk Dave’s handler, wild life rehabilitator Robert Will, claims an accuracy of over 90 per cent.
