A dolls’ house in your pocket

February 16th, 2012

Do you remember Polly Pockets which were popular in the early 90s?

You might even have had one.  For the uninitiated, they were little dolls and you could buy accessories which included a dolls’ house in a compact case measuring under 5in, small enough to fit in your pocket.

According to a blog on the exotically named Independent Florida Alligator website, a student newspaper, they were manufactured by a British toy company, Bluebird Toys, in 1989.  The company was later bought by Mattel who subsequently redesigned the dolls, making them much larger.

Whilst they may have lost their original pocket-size charm, Polly Pockets and toys like them can still serve as an introduction to the wonderful world of dolls’ houses for young children.

And as we all know, it’s a hobby that can last a lifetime.
