A Wild West dolls’ house, Suzy’s Saloon

November 26th, 2012

Susan Stacey, from Merseyside, sent us photos of an old West saloon, Suzy’s Saloon.

Like all of the entries in this year’s Creative Competition, it was based on The Corner Shop small project.

Susan says: “My son actually came up with the idea as soon as he saw the kit. He suggested the saloon from Back To The Future 3 but I didn’t think a 12th scale Delorean would be an easy car to create (!) so it became an ordinary saloon.

“Outside, the saloon has been lifted up onto a board and blocks in order to raise it. The board has been covered in stained oak floorboards. The outer walls of the saloon have been covered in strips of wood which resemble logs.

“I changed the direction of the staircase on the outside as I wanted to create an outside balcony. The balcony has stained floorboards and spindle hand rail.

“Saloon doors have been added to the original doorway. I created signs above the saloon doors and on the upper corner wall.

“Outside the saloon is a horse, dog, barrels, rusty bath on a table, cartwheel, rocking chair, bags, and a wheel-cart. The roof is made of painted corrugated cardboard and sprayed with hairspray to create a shine.

The ground floor saloon has stained floorboards.

The walls  have been partially panelled using lollipop sticks. Skirting boards and beading have been added.

The remainder of the wall is decorated in wallpaper.

The back bar is a shop unit which has had top shelves removed and glass compact mirrors fitted- one has gold lettering stating Suzy’s Saloon.

Bottles and glasses have been added along with a barrel with a tap. The bar has been stained and panells have been added on the front along with bar towels.

On the bar is a cash register, glasses, a pistol. A barman stands behind the bar.

Susan says: “In the saloon two cowboys play cards at tables which have been covered in green felt. One cowboy sits alone hiding a pistol behind his back. Beside him is  a spitoon and on the table is an ashtray and glasses.”

The piano and stool have been stained and on the top is a lamp, western music and a flagon. A yucca plant sits by the piano. A hat stand is by the saloon doors with boots, hat, lasso and rifle. a pot bellied stove is by the bar at the back with a basket of logs. On the walls are two heads, a clock, mirror, horse brasses and cow horns which I made from Filo The ceiling is beamed and has an electric light.

The bed has white bedding with a red velvet throw. Flowers, a bed warmer and stockings sit on top. Under the bed is a chamber pot and cash box. The bedside cabinets have lit candles, flowers, a clock and photo. The tall mirror has a box of tissues. The wardrobe has boxes on top which came from spain. The dressing table has a lace runner, jug and bowl, perfume, mirror, jewellery box, hairbrush, comb and mirror.
