Gothic architecture flourished during the medieval period and was known at the time as “the French Style”. Evolving over many years from the very early Norman architecture, it is most familiar as the style of many of the great cathedrals, abbeys and castles across the United Kingdom. Cumberland Castle, with its strong vertical lines, ‘leaded’ arched windows, imposing stonework and heavy wooden doors, can be externally decorated and dressed to reflect the harsh surroundings of Bonnie Prince Charlie, or in a mellow stone finish found further south – perhaps with a more comfortable interior!
