Getting Started

Building the stairsCreating Space For Stairs I also cut a section from the ground floor ceiling to create the stairwell and cut in small channels for the light cables. I then glued the sides and back section to the base.

With the ground floor ceiling in position, but not glued, I made the stairs from basswood by working out the gradient and carefully measuring and gluing each individual step. These were finally painted, covered in a marble effect paper and fitted with carpet.

On the walls I used a combination of thin corrugated card that I’d painted black, gold and black card and marble effect paper, which I also used for the floor. I fixed these into position with strong double-sided tape instead of glue to prevent buckling.

Come back next week for an update.

Miniature Cinema Dry Build

Dry BuildArched DoorsAlthough I already had other projects on the go when I saw the Dolls House Emporium competition kit I knew instantly I was going to buy one as I liked the shape and size. I’d had an idea for some time of a cinema project – the idea being that if my miniature world were real it would be a kind of ‘folly’ in the grounds of my house.

Before the kit had even arrived I’d already sketched out a rough design of how it would look and began to make notes about the construction process. Although I’m always tempted to get stuck in with the making, planning the order that things needed to be done was critical. I don’t build the entire structure and then decorate each room, I build in sections to ensure I have good access to work on certain areas before they become too difficult to reach.

At the dry build stage I was in a position to be more specific, working out the exact measurements for individual items and what needed adapting and adding structurally. For example, the false walls to accommodate the stairs and where and how the lights would be fitted.

The Music room

Music room

The Music Room.  I’m not very far on this room yet, but it’s coming together.  I used some wallpaper I got from Hobby Lobby.  For the crown moulding, I separated the border section from the wallpaper and used it as a separate piece.  The bottom edge of the crown is chair rail moulding and the top is regular crown.  The shallow niche at the back of the room will feature a large oil painting, over the Bespaq Gothic Revival Console, of a little girl playing the piano.

The piano in the picture I already had on hand.  It’s one of my favorite pieces of furniture because it really plays music…it’s a music box.  The white chimney breast to the right of the room will have its own fireplace.

Rooftop

Roof top

Here’s a partial rooftop shot showing the slate roofing tiles that are now available through me.  I think they look stunning with the color and style of this house.  I’m looking forward to finishing up the chimneys once I order the paper I want from DHE.

I’m extremely pleased with the wood trimwork that DHE provides with this kit.  The detailing is beautiful and unlike any other kit I’ve seen.
